The challenge

Hafnia Sea and Corona Sea were coming to the end of their time charter with Transfennica, and needed to be back in the previous owner’s colours before the charter expired at New Year. That gave AK Marine a tight, fixed deadline running through the Christmas period, planned around the vessels’ existing port calls so neither ship had to come out of service.

All four hull side TRANSFENNICA logos had to be covered completely, and both funnels repainted in the owner’s blue. Every surface was prepared beforehand with high pressure washing, and all the equipment, cherry pickers, a pressure washer and support vehicles, was AK Marine’s own.

What we did

Hull sides, port and starboard

All four hull side logos, two per vessel, were covered over in hull colour. Surfaces were high pressure washed first, then the covering coat went on, masking the charterer’s branding out completely.

Funnels

Both funnels were fully repainted in blue, removing the charterer’s markings completely.

Crew, equipment and planning

AK Marine sent its own certified painting crew (STCW qualified) to join each vessel as supernumeraries, living and working aboard for the duration. All equipment was provided by AK Marine. The job was scoped, quoted and confirmed within days in mid December, with an advance two person team boarding Hafnia Sea in Paldiski on 16 December to get ahead on funnel work during transit port calls, easing the load on the main crew who joined at Hanko for the main push on 26 and 27 December.

Weather extension, Corona Sea

Wind during the Hanko call was too strong to safely run the cherry picker on Corona Sea’s funnel, so that funnel wasn’t finished in the original window. Rather than push the work through in unsafe conditions, a two person team stayed aboard for the vessel’s next leg to Lübeck, Germany, where a cherry picker was organised in cooperation with the vessel owner, AK Marine and the port. The funnel was signed off on 31 December, and the team flew home just in time for New Year.

This job ran against a fixed deadline set by the charter’s expiry, over the Christmas and New Year period, including a weather driven extension finished in Lübeck without missing the handover date. Both vessels’ masters told us they were very pleased with the team and how the job was handled.
